Installing the kernel debuginfo packages on RedHat

Many diagnostic and debugging utilities, including crash, SystemTap, oprofile, and gdb, require the “debuginfo” version of a package to be fully functional.

For example, to analyze a kernel vmcore using crash, the kernel-debuginfo package must be installed.

## Check that your OS can see the channel change/update.
# rhn-channel --add --channel=rhel-x86_64-server-debuginfo
# rhn-channel -l
rhel-x86_64-server
rhel-x86_64-server-debuginfo
# uname -a
Linux myhostr0cks 2.6.32-358.2.1.el6.x86_64 #1 SMP Wed Feb 20 12:17:37 EST 2013 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

# debuginfo-install kernel-2.6.32-358.6.1.el6.x86_64

The following 2 RPM's are downloaded matching your exact kernel version.

kernel-debuginfo
kernel-debuginfo-common-x86_64

Of course you can use debuginfo-install to install the debuginfo for any package and it’ll work out any package dependencies.
